Calling All Train Nuts

Here's a blog with more info than you probably ever wanted on the Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad, which operated from 1857 to 1899.

If you are really, really, really into trains, you won't be disappointed.

  1. There used to be a narrowgauge rail running between my village and Mack City, utilized by the loggers. And several temporary encampments running parallel to the Lake and tracks. A huge dock ran out into Sturgeon bay, where the timber was loaded, and goods offloaded here.Occasionaly, I'll come across remnants of the rail workings, buried in the woods, and the old timbers from the dock, long destroyed by the Lake,(which I figure is only Right),work up from the bottom of the Bay every once in a while. One of the uber riche here actually brought in a backhoe to drag a timber off the beach to utilize in their "cabin". The damage to flora was, uh, regretable but unnoticed by authorities.

You might enjoy my book about Flint called "Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City," a Michigan Notable Book for 2014 and a finalist for the 33rd Annual Northern California Book Award for Creative NonFiction. Filmmaker Michael Moore described Teardown as "a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city." More information about Teardown is available at www.teardownbook.com.
