Melissa Burden of The Flint Journal reports: "The Country Fresh dairy plant on Chavez Drive, which dates to 1929, will cease production in mid-August, affecting 110 employees and some of its 68 drivers, said Marguerite Copel, a spokeswoman for Dallas-based Dean Foods Co., the parent company of Country Fresh."
I wonder if Ms. Burden was apprised of the fact that the long-time General Manager of McDonald Cooperative Dairy, the preceding owner of what became Countryside, was a fellow named Keith Burden. No relation, I'm pretty sure. Keith and his wife Dorothy lived three doors up the street from my parents in Mott Park in the 50s and 60s.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad's store was across the street from the dairy during my high school years. I ate lunch many summer days in the dairy's little mini-restaurant on Lewis Street. The entire menu: hot dogs, ice cream and milk shakes.
The current jobs are the most important loss, of course, but the closing can't take away the personal memories.
