Farewell to Central High School

The Flint Central High School Alumni Association has scheduled a farewell gathering on the last day of school, June 12, 2009. Tours of Central, food concessions and more are being planned.

All Flint Central Alumni are invited to attend. Remember Spirit Week? Remember the great camaraderie of class spirit going into the game between Central and Northern? Remember the pride of being a Flint Central Indian and Phoenix? Cheerleaders, sports players, theatre members, chess club, debate team members and others, please come out to join us in this final gathering.

At the conclusion of this event we will gather all past and present members of the Flint Central A Cappella Choir on the front lawn of the school grounds to join hands and sing our beloved benediction, "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" to our beloved school. The Choir members will be assembling at about 6:15 pm and plan to sing around 7:00 p.m.

One of the past A Cappella Choir directors from 1974 — 1977, Gregory Dennis, will be there to direct the group. If you are a past or present Flint Central A Cappella member please join us for this once in a lifetime event.

Gathering and tours will commence at 3:00pm and will conclude at 7:00pm in front of the school.

Check out that Phoenix logo?!?! If you need any more evidence of how overrated Central really is (was), well... there ya go.

  3. I attended Northern (65-68). Nevertheless, this is sad...really sad.

  4. I come from a "split" family. My dad's side graduated from Central, my mom's side and I graduated from Northern. Thanksgiving at our house always started with "The Game" and the rivalry ran strong well after we'd all left Flint.

It's understandable that schools must close, but that doesn't diminish the sadness. -- Bummed in California

  5. I should be able to get another tour of that stairwell and the door it leads to. Yeah, you know the one I'm talking about. Also, the pool. You know the one. Especially if you were in theatre...

  6. I'm another Northern grad (1978) whose Dad was an Indian and Mother was a Viking. It's hard to see our longtime rival close. This, on top of my junior high (Longfellow) being closed a couple years back, and now my elementary (Anderson) will be shut down. Coming back to town gets a little sadder all the time.

  7. I'm a 1964 Flint Northern grad, and I remember fondly the rivalry with Central*. Even so, it is hard to see it close. I'm glad that it is being commemorated with these events, though. I think the old Northern was just unceremoniously torn down, and the new school, also called Northern, is just not the same.

Garfield, my elementary school, is also closing today, and Emerson, my Jr. High was closed and torn down long ago.

I think when I was growing up Flint was booming like few other places ever do. It is sad to see it decline so, but in reality, the economics that supported its prosperity and growth are no longer there, and are unlikely to be replaced.

*Does anyone remember the infamous pig incident during the halftime show of the Northern - Central game on Thanksgiving day of 1962? I have pictures!
