wouldn't it be wonderful if he premiered at Whiting auditorium. Silly me..What was I thinking. Gordy, pull some strings and see if you can make it happen. Michael doesn't speak to me anymore. unclebuck
I was so happy when I found Flint Expatriates. I even want to donate. But when I see things about Michael Moore I could puke. Please try to keep this site for all from Flint. There are enough other polictical sites.
Michael Moore is home grown talent. Whether you agree with his political/economic views or not, it shouldn't be a factor. This blog touches all the bases regardless of the niche..I'm new here too, but the subject content seems to be open to all for scrutiny. A "donation threat" shouldn't be based on lack of objectivity. I'm not in Michael's corner that much either, but I'm sending a donation anyway. unclebuck
This is a blog about Flint. There's no political litmus test for inclusion in the blog. I do try to steer clear of too much political material because I figure you can get it elsewhere. Quite simply, Michael Moore is the most famous living person in the world with a Flint connection. When he makes a new film he's going to be in the blog. But I'm hoping there's plenty of other material you can enjoy. And I'm glad you found the blog.
NONONO! I do not mean to be rude - but ---- This is NOT true - there are many other famous 'living' people who have connections to Flint--and - unlike Moore--they do not degrade Flint as he does ~!~
I totally disagree the Michael Moore degrades Flint. As a matter of fact I am born and raised in Florida and when I saw the devastation in Flint, (which was brought to my attention via Roger and ME) I packed my bags and moved to Carriage Town where i restored a huge piece of Flint history in the Charles Nash home. Everyone in Flint seems to think Mr. Moore degrades Flint, but the miss the fact that the group who degraded Flint and disrespected them is General Motors. Mr. Moore only brought to light how much Flint had given for GM and how in the end GM gave nothing back to Flint. Mike Moore did an excellent job showing what really happened in Flint after GM destoryed the economic structure here. How is it degrading to lose everything as a city and have the strength to come back? Many cities would have just given up but I find the people of Flint to be a strong group of people who have a passion for what they believe in. Flint has a great history, a huge downfall and a wonderful future. To all those in Carrige Town keep up the fight, it shall never be over and keep making progress. A lot can be learned from Carrige Town from the rest fo the city. Nick, David, Nathan, Rebecca, Leanne, Dewayne, Ray, Nancy, Ken, Mike and Perry as well as countless others have waged a 25 yr war on crime, poverty and blight, keep up the wonderful work and never lose sight of your ultimate goals.
Perhaps this is a double standard of mine. But, since M.M. puts down Flint, it bugs me that he says he's from Flint when he's really from Burton.
Whereas, someone who only points out the positive values of Flint, they could be from Flushing for all I care and could still say they grew up in Flint. That wouldn't bother me a bit.
Karenc58 ref. I agree, but he didn't always be a moldy spore. Once he was fresh produce with good ideas for being such a young sprout. Davison Hotline, Harry Chapin food relief concerts and some other positive acts. Then the scourge set in, and he began to deteriorate. His trip out to "Mother Jones" in Frisco. His head was too big to fit a hat in that publication. Sometime in that period, spoilage took over. A touch of success beget what we see today....$$$$$$$ and all that it spawns. unclebuck
M. Moore went to school in Davison, a lily white conservative little community. He was elected to, and sat on the school board when he was about eighteen or nineteen years old. His views and actions were pretty controversial while he sat in that position. He did stir the pot, so to speak. I think the Journal archives may have some reportage about the nature of his tenure. unclebuck
I really fail to see why so many people hate this guy, unless it's simply because they disagree with his politics. So he points out Flint's problems while calling for changes that he thinks will help places like Flint. In the process, he gets rich. So he grew up in Davison and lives in NYC and Up North now. So what? He can't help where he grew up, and if you check the census date, he's not the first guy to leave Flint. Umm, isn't this an American success story?
Perhaps if I felt he had integrity and didn't USE his film subjects and edit down their comments to portray HIS version of the truth (and misrepresent his subjects accordingly), I might like him.
I'm not saying his films aren't entertaining, but at who's cost?
Yesss. A spirited debate. Your thoughts and feelings being expressed freely without the fear of a visit in the night by the powers that be. More, more....unclebuck
Actually, I'm pretty sure that the Flint Voice =was= once visited (maybe not in the night) by the powers that be. Namely the FBI. I've always thought that the event was responsible for MM's paranoia.
I think what Michael Moore has done is to make Flint appear worse than many other similar cities who share Flint's problems, some better, some worse. Other cities have better Public Relations. Michael Moore is a Public Relations nightmare for the City.
I feel bad that many people feel that Michael Moore's style of politics is the only answer to Flint's and the Nation's problems. Internationally, countries from Russia to Sweden to Canada and everywhere in between are abandoning these ideas in droves.
I'm really mad at the kids and teachers who hassled Michael Moore in Davison, for they are in great part responsible for his empowerment.
Physicians and leaders in Cuba said it showed an unrealistically favorable picture of Cuba's healthcare system, which could lead to citizen backlash if the movie was shown in Cuba.
Thanks for commenting. I moderate comments, so it may take a while for your comment to appear. You might enjoy my book about Flint called "Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City," a Michigan Notable Book for 2014 and a finalist for the 33rd Annual Northern California Book Award for Creative NonFiction. Filmmaker Michael Moore described Teardown as "a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city." More information about Teardown is available at www.teardownbook.com.

ReplyDeleteI'm just waiting to see where in the film he'll say, "Back in my hometown of Flint, Michigan...," like he says in every other one.
ReplyDeletehaha J.L. that's a pet peeve of mine too :)
ReplyDeleteI always like how he mentions Flint in every movie.

ReplyDeleteMichael Moore has never degraded Flint.

Wikileaks reveals the reason "Sicko" was outlawed in Cuba (From a UK Newspaper)

Is it true that Michael offered to pay or help pay Assanges bail? Thought I read that somewhere.
ReplyDeleteHe was quoted in news coverage as saying that he'd sent $20K.
ReplyDeleteBianca Jagger, Mick's ex, was another notable donor.
