Riverfront Residence Hall: The Hyatt Regency Finally Discovers Its True Calling
Check out the old Hyatt Regency's new collegiate look. I have to say it seems a lot more appealing than Smith Hall at the University of Missouri (below) where I bunked for a short sentence.
Having suffered the indignities of rooming with a (clinically depressed) 18-year-old Gordie at Jacksonville University in 1985, I can see why he left that experience off his list of former collegiate domiciles. With aluminum-foiled windows blocking all sunlight and the thermostat set at a constant 60 degrees, it was not unlike living in cold storage for furs. With an ill-tempered goat.
Dave, I see you still harbor a lot of resentments about our fun-filled year in the armpit of the nation — Jacksonville, Florida. As a Michigander, I just couldn't take all that warm weather and sunshine, hence the AC and tin foil. I clearly missed the "unique" weather of Flint. And I was just mad that you always let those clowns from Iowa across the hall sit on my bed all the time. Ahhh, college. To think you pay for that experience.
No doubt this will not be a welcome remark on FlintExpats, but my family, when living in Flint, used to refer to it as "the armpit of the universe"... (I do have some fond memories, of course.)
Thanks for commenting. I moderate comments, so it may take a while for your comment to appear. You might enjoy my book about Flint called "Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City," a Michigan Notable Book for 2014 and a finalist for the 33rd Annual Northern California Book Award for Creative NonFiction. Filmmaker Michael Moore described Teardown as "a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city." More information about Teardown is available at www.teardownbook.com.
Be honest Gordie. Your confinment and sentence in Missouri was self imposed. That building looks like a military barracks, not UM.
ReplyDeleteHorrible, horrible. So what crime did you commit?
ReplyDelete1st degree graduate school.
