Catching on

Flint can't catch a break when it comes to jobs and the economy, but some things are easier to catch than others.

"Syphilis continues to spread among Genesee County residents, according to the latest health alert issued this week by the Genesee County Health Department," Elizabeth Shaw of The Flint Journal reports. "So far in 2008, 70 cases have been reported in the county, an increase of more than 400 percent compared to 2007."

    Will this be another one of those stories that goes national? It seems Flint keeps finding new ways to distinguish itself. Unless of course this is a national trend, in which case the NYT will write about it, featuring Flint as an example. Someone at the Times always seems to have their eye on Flint.

    I've been wondering what the deal is with Flint and the NY Times as well. They seem almost obsessed with Flint, even though any number of Midwest cities that have deindustrialized could serve as examples in their stories. Oh well, I guess there are worse things than having the Times write about you, although the coverage doesn't seem to be helping in any way.
