Care2 and Local Harvest are having an online contest to pick the best farmer's market in the county, and Flint is currently in first place. Cast your vote here.
I remember going to the Farmers' Market as a kid. It was near the Red Cross building, which always freaked me out, for some reason. I thought I was going to be bled against my will...
The market in this picture looks every bit as healthy and beautiful as the one I remember.
The great thing about the Farmer's Market is that you can go there with anyone, your parents, your kids, your new friend, your old friends and etc. I miss it still. Where I live now the Farmers' Market will sell you a $5 tomato, chocolate for $50 a pound.
I grew up in the north end, on Westmoreland Ave, a stone's throw from Maurice Olk/Donovan North/St. Agnes/Dukette. Anyway, does anybody remember a guy (farmer) who would drive around in an old school bus and peddle his fruits and vegetables from the bus? I seem to remember the bus was blue for some reason.
Hey Northender.... I remember him!! My brother says he is still around that neighborhood peddling his produce. I don't think it is the same man though. Maybe it is his son or grandson now. The last time I saw him was back in the 60's and I snitched a grape and he yelled at me. I had to penance at St Agnes Church at Mass!
Thanks for commenting. I moderate comments, so it may take a while for your comment to appear. You might enjoy my book about Flint called "Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City," a Michigan Notable Book for 2014 and a finalist for the 33rd Annual Northern California Book Award for Creative NonFiction. Filmmaker Michael Moore described Teardown as "a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city." More information about Teardown is available at www.teardownbook.com.
