"The number of cases of infectious syphilis continues to climb in Genesee County, said a recent alert from the Genesee County Health Department."As of the first week of November, there have been 109 reported cases this year: a 2,000 percent increase compared to the same time last year when there were five cases reported.
"The rate is now three times higher than Detroit, which historically has the highest rate in the state."

Catching on
Flint can't catch a break when it comes to jobs and the economy, but some things are easier to catch than others.
"Syphilis continues to spread among Genesee County residents, according to the latest health alert issued this week by the Genesee County Health Department," Elizabeth Shaw of The Flint Journal reports. "So far in 2008, 70 cases have been reported in the county, an increase of more than 400 percent compared to 2007."
