Obama visits Flint

I'm not sure how to react to this cartoon by Donar. If I'm charitable, this could be a way of saying we should fix our own country before we blow millions more on Iraq. But I sense that this is just another cheap shot at Flint. And to use one troubled place to make fun of another troubled place is, well, troubling. But maybe I'm just not getting it.

  2. I know it was sort of a cheap shot and I humbly apologize. My folks live in Swartz Creek and I was given the grand tour of Flint this past month...I guess this is what "inspired" the cartoon. But in a cheap negative way. I will do another cartoon that emphasizes that our cities need to be supported and reinvested. There are some good things in Flint, but it's tragic how the US has thrown away cities like Flint, Toledo, Buffalo, and Erie. All places that I've seen and lived near.

You might enjoy my book about Flint called "Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City," a Michigan Notable Book for 2014 and a finalist for the 33rd Annual Northern California Book Award for Creative NonFiction. Filmmaker Michael Moore described Teardown as "a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city." More information about Teardown is available at www.teardownbook.com.
