  2. When I was in kindergarten I begged my older sisters to roll my long red hair in perm rods to get just this same hairstyle. I think I wanted to look like the guy on the TV show "Room 222".

So I slept on these rods and woke up with excitement to take them out the next morning. When my sisters picked out (not combed out) my fro, I started sobbing uncontrollably. My grumbling mother washed the fro out of my hair just in time for morning kindergarten.

Remember how these fros sparked the combs with handles that had sayings like "keep on trucking" or "if you can read this you are too close"? My sister's friend - a white male with a fro - used to keep his comment comb stuck in the fro for safe keeping.

  3. What a fine looking young man.... I remember, he always wanted to emulate his uncle, a Flint Expatriate who led the great exodus back in the late sixties.

You might enjoy my book about Flint called "Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City," a Michigan Notable Book for 2014 and a finalist for the 33rd Annual Northern California Book Award for Creative NonFiction. Filmmaker Michael Moore described Teardown as "a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city." More information about Teardown is available at www.teardownbook.com.
