Gordon Young

Gordon Young is a San Francisco-based freelance journalist. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Slate, Utne Reader, Southern Exposure, Washington City Paper, Business 2.0, The Industry Standard, The Advocate, The San Jose Mercury News and SFGate, the website of The San Francisco Chronicle.


He is currently writing a book about America's dying cities and the people trying to save them for the University of California Press.

Gordon is a former staff writer at SF Weekly in San Francisco and the former special sections editor at Metro Newspapers in San Jose. He also worked as a reporter at Spectrum Weekly in Little Rock, Arkansas.


He publishes Flint Expatriates, a blog exploring economic and urban planning issues related to his hometown of Flint, Michigan and the rest of the Rust Belt, along with numerous odes to people, places and things that no longer exist in the Vehicle City.


He is a lecturer/media adviser in the Communication Department at Santa Clara University, where he teaches a variety of journalism courses and advises The Santa Clara student newspaper and KSCU 103.3 FM, a community radio station.


He earned a master's degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a master's degree in Literature from the University of Nottingham in England.
