Flint Murder Map

I'm attempting to track and map each murder throughout the year at Flint Expatriates Community Walk , an online mapping service. There is also a link available in the right-hand column of the blog. Click on the map tabs for more information about each murder.

I have five murders so far, but there are probably more, so feel free to update me with more information. And thanks to the reader who alerted me that my earlier numbers were low.

(The often unfortunate ads included with the pop-up window for each murder are the cost of doing business; the mapping service is only "free" if you include the ads. I don't make any money off them. I wonder if the advertisers realize they're sharing space with homicide victims in Flint.)

  1. You may want to do a little more research, Flint has exceeded 4 homicides this year.

  2. Thanks for the suggestion. I found another case to bring the number to five, but I think I'm still missing some.

You are missing Jerome Washington also.

The Flint Police Department is not publishing complete statistics at the order of Mayor Con. This lets ABC report that murder is down 71% when it is not. There have been at least 3 more, not to mention Steven D. Sales found in the Flint river. The FPD rushed to call that an accident, but in light of their inaccurate reporting it is hard to give their evaluation any merit. In light of us coming out of the 2nd worst snowfall in reported history and one of the top 4 coolest springs on record it is logical.

Once the Mayors budget kicks in with the summer heat, life will be much more interesting in Flint.

  4. Correction not Sales, http://abclocal.go.com/wjrt/media?id=6076019 is the relevant story on the body in the river.

  5. Isn't it interesting that we can show 5 murders occurring beyond a shadow of a doubt in Flint in the first 4 months of the year, but the Flint Police department thinks that there was only four?

Thanks for commenting. I moderate comments, so it may take a while for your comment to appear. You might enjoy my book about Flint called "Teardown: Memoir of a Vanishing City," a Michigan Notable Book for 2014 and a finalist for the 33rd Annual Northern California Book Award for Creative NonFiction. Filmmaker Michael Moore described Teardown as "a brilliant chronicle of the Mad Maxization of a once-great American city." More information about Teardown is available at www.teardownbook.com.
