2012 World Series: Just Walk Away

Many readers have mentioned that they would like an original painting to commemorate the 2012 World Series. Well, I may have found just the thing, courtesy of artists Michael Dumontier and Neil Farber.

1927-1928

The Detroit Tigers uniforms are considered classics, but who knew they had such questionable logos over the years?

Flint Photos: Riding for the Tigers

Joyce Mason, a student at Flint Junior College, pledged to ride this ferris wheel in July of 1959 until the Detroit Tigers reached 1st place in the American League or the park shut down for Labor Day. Not sure how it all turned out. Anyone know?

Not Man Enough

I'm officially not watching any more Tigers games. It's too painful. I can't take it.

Tigers Clinch

Justin Verlander celebrates in the clubhouse.

The Tigers clinch their first division title since 1987, back when guys like Matt Nokes, Darrell Evans, Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, Tom Brookens, Kirk Gibson, Chet Lemon, Pat Sheridan, Bill Madlock, Jack Morris, Doyle Alexander, Frank Tanana, and Willie Hernandez were on the team. That's also the year I learned to really hate the Minnesota Twins.

Memories of Sparky Anderson

A reader remembers Sparky Anderson:
God bless you Sparky. I’ll remember you jumping over the chalk on the way to the mound; Talking to fans at the 1988 Fenway opener and throwing your arm around journeyman Paul Gibson making his debut before the player introductions and an epic Clemens/Morris matchup. There was your trademark half-wave and grin offered to Tigers fans after a sweep at Comiskey in the eighties. And were those tears in your eyes as you waved to the fans on your last visit to Fenway?
Here's more Sparky at the 25th anniversary of Detroit's 1984 World Series win.

Granderson Headed to the Yankees

Are the Tigers really going to let Curtis Granderson go to the Yankees? ESPN says they are.

Update: Yes, it's true.

Another Update: What do the Tigers get out of this deal with the Yankees and Diamondbacks? Tommy Rancel at Beyond the Box Score writes:
The Tigers are giving up the biggest piece in the deal in Granderson, and downgrade a bit in the interim, but gain four cheap and controllable pieces that should help for seasons to come. Detroit has made no secret about wanting to shed payroll, and clearing at least $25.75 million guaranteed to Granderson helps accomplish that goal. They also save on Edwin Jackson's impending ERA inflated arbitration raise. They receive Max Scherzer as the big prize in return. Not only can he fill Jackson's spot in the rotation immediately, but stands a decent chance of upgrading it for much less.

The Tigers could also immediately turn to soon-to-be 23-year-old Austin Jackson to fill Granderson's spot in the field. There will no doubt be a significant dip in production overall, but Jackson stands to be at least average in centerfield and brings speed to the lineup. As is the case with most young players, he strikes out a lot and hasn't mastered the art of walks, but for the league minimum he could provide a nice value in Granderson's absence.

The other two pieces, Schlereth and Coke, will help shore up a Tigers pen than stands to lose Brandon Lyon and Fernando Rodney to free agency. Both pitchers are lefties, and neither are regarded as a future relief ace, but both stand to be average at least and more importantly cheap and controllable.

The Joys of Indoor Baseball

Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press on the Tigers excruciating final game of the season:
Ryan Raburn knew this was an unusual day when it started raining indoors.

"Stuff kept dropping," the Tigers' leftfielder said. "It was hittin' me. I was wonderin' what the hell it was. Sure enough, the roof was leaking."

If you had to make a list of the remarkable events in the Twins' extra-inning, extra-game, extra-painful elimination of the Tigers on Tuesday, the indoor rain would be ... what, 47th on the list? This was one of those rare, special days in sports where the moment seems so important, the game cannot possibly live up to it -- and then the game exceeds it.

Tigers

The Tigers are absolutely killing me. Tied up. Extra innings. Rodney, my favorite player, will not let us down.

Update: Well, maybe he will, but he threw a lot of pitches. Not his fault. So many chances to win this game. Tigers lose. Season over.
